It has been almost 22 years since I have moved from London to Amsterdam. My first address on one of the canals too now living where I dreamt of living in Amsterdam when I first moved here. Certain things are written in the stars.
Walking through ‘Maison Amsterdam’ at the Nieuwe Kerk really brought back so many memories of the city I now truly call my own.
‘Maison Amsterdam’ is the first ever fashion exhibition in history with the Dutch capital at its core.
The church has been temporarily transformed into Holland’s largest fashion house and presents over 150 creations, historical and contemporary, that tell stories of Amsterdam as a fashion capital with its own, entirely unique signature. MAISON AMSTERDAM seeks out what is typically ‘Amsterdam’ about the fashion in this liberal and creative city, which is cherished as the city where anything is possible..
Inspired by all what we saw, there where many designers which I had a story with. Most of all ofcourse the Iconic Frank Govers. No marriage or important event in my family was complete with a creation from the masters hand! Including my holy communion dress, which was worn by all three of us and later on by my niece. A dress telling a story of 4 women in my family.
Every designer or individual is inspired by their own world, their own life, being it the infamous Roxy nightclub, the first gay marriage to the encredible ‘tutu’ for ‘longdistanceballet’ during COVID19 designed by G-Star and performed by the National Ballet.
What strikes me is that no matter where you look in life, the way one expresses one self is also a work of art. Unique, timeless, suprising, all that makes Amsterdam the city it is, the canvas for so many who live in it
So, instead of me telling you, when you go out, look up, you’ll be suprised, I now say, go out and look around you and you might be inspired!
